Types of Bindis

A bindi is a forehead decoration worn by women, children and men in South Asia. The word bindi comes from bindu in Sanskrit, which means a drop, small particle, a dot. Bindis traditionally are red but also come in other colors. The dot is made using vermilion or tikka powder. The bindi is placed in the center of a woman's forehead, close to her eyebrows. Sometimes the bindi is jewelry rather than a red dot. Many consider the bindi as representative of the mystic third eye. The bindi is often a social symbol, much like a band. Red represents good fortune in the new home of the bride.
Traditional Dot and Current Trends

Bindis are available in various shapes, sizes and colors, including a leaf, snake, half moon, heart, star, tear and clover. Some bindis are multi-colored or layered and consist of more than one shape and color. Sticker bindis are available. Some bindis are made of velvet. Diamonds and Semi Precious Stones
In addition, bindis sometimes feature diamonds, pearls, semi precious stones, gold plating, encrusted enamel, glass beads, rhinestones, silver and/or gold thread and sequins and may have a felt backing or adhesive back that sticks to your forehead.
Powder
Powdered bindis remain on the market. Kits are available that contain various colors of powder along with blocks that are patterned. After dipping the patterned block into the powder, press it firmly against the forehead and you will end up with a powder imprint.
Widows
Indian widows do not wear bindis. A bare forehead is the sign of widowhood. Some, however, put a small black dot on their forehead that signifies their loss.
